New York, The Empire State!

With the camper hitched up, we take off on our next adventure of exploring western New York State, entering back into the country through Montreal & over a bridge giving us a glimpse of the 1000 Islands region…WOW! We had to tell Ken to keep his eyes straight ahead of him so he didn’t drive off the side of the bridge from the amazing views!!

Our first destination was Association Island in Henderson, NY, just down the road from Sackets Harbor. As we drove up, we were pumped to see that the island was small & home only to the campground. We were actually going to camp ON Lake Ontario!!

Our first morning, we were trapped inside because of the “midge’s” as they call them. They look like huge mosquitos, but they don’t buzz around & thankfully, they don’t bite. For about 2 weeks of the season, they swarm…& we just happened to be there during the swarm. I’m not a bug person at all (why I love camping is a mystery given this fact)…so this was trying for me…but the fact that they didn’t bite offered some relief. Look at this place…what a spot to park your home on wheels, huh!!!

Guess we won’t be having breakfast on the porch this morning!! Prisoners in our own home with all the midges!!!

For history this year, we are obviously studying the living history of America as we pass through each state. This has been a wonderful reminder to us of the Classical Conversation songs we love, specifically the War of 1812 song which we sung many times while walking the streets of Sackets Harbor, learning more details about the War & the battles fought on these grounds. Was very fitting to spend our Memorial Day here in remembrance & prayer for the men who have given their lives for our freedom.

Moving on mid-week to the infamous Niagara Falls area, we were excited to see the wonder of the falls! With only 2 days in the area, we made it count. We hit everything!!

Day 1: American side…

Cave of the Winds

Our issued uniforms…after we laughed HARD about the ultra stylin’ sandals, we had to force ourselves to remove them. They were so comfy that our Teva’s & Keen’s were hard to go back to!

This video was before we headed up to the hurricane deck!

DCIM100SPORT

Maid of the Mist was our boat ride into the center of the falls…soooo exhillerating, we loved every second! The wind was so strong that it blew the water up under our ponchos & we got soaked!

Any dry patches of clothes were sopping wet after we ventured up to the “power-wash” deck. I screamed the whole way up & down…a total thrill!!!

We listened to the audio book, “Queen of the Falls” before arriving. It was mind-blowing to imagine Annie Taylor, a 62 year old, etiquette teacher, barreling down the falls…but then standing before those same falls & experienced their power, I have to say that I can’t quite understand WHY anyone would ever attempt it!!! Here is a piece of the actual cable from Nik Wallenda’s walk over the falls in 2012.

Day 2: Canadian side…plus the bonus of spending the day with our dear friend Janice Mason from Toronto!!

Janice came in to have a picnic lunch with us at our camper & we finally got to meet her nephew Caius. He & Caden are the same age & had a great day together!

How special to spend time catching up while walking the edge of Horseshoe Falls together. We were even treated to her favorite restaurant Swiss Chalet, so yummy! Thanks Janice for your visit & the delectable Chalet Sauce:):), it was the best!!!
