Rollin’ Out!

Today is Day 1 & we’ve made our way to the Mini-Golf Capital of the World…that’s right, Myrtle Beach! As native Floridians, we all love the beach. Last year we flipped a home in Tampa during what we consider beach season & this year we moved to Jax & have been busy settling in & getting ready for this trip, hence no beach days. So you can imagine our total excitement to head to the beach & relax. We will have 4 days in Myrtle Beach, then 5 more in Outer Banks, NC. We’re considering this our “summer break”, which makes us laugh because wearing sweaters over swimsuits doesn’t feel so summery, but our feet will still be in the sand! After that we hit the Northeast full force & year-round school starts back with LIVING HISTORY as our most exciting subject!

We’ve had a ton of questions & some funny responses. Some wonder just how in the world we got into this crazy adventure, others in complete bewilderment thinking we will be popping a tent in each location. (I only wish we were that adventurous!)

So I’ll take you back to the beginning….like back to the early 1980’s…

I grew up camping each year at the Sewanee River then the Okefenokee Swamp in GA. We had a small group of families that went each year around Halloween time. Pumpkin carving contests, nighttime forest trails withOUT flashlights, boat rides counting the alligators, cooking our food over the fire…so much fun & memories that have lasted forever! Our camping group still gets together with the younger generation running the show now.

More than 20 years & 2 children later, the camping itch hit hard. Borrowing a tent & taking everything we could think of from floor lamps to coffee maker & microwave, we ventured out to the white sands of Ft. DeSoto. We were hooked!!!

The next spring we had our 1st camping group with the Jenkins, McColloughs & Owens. The group grew in the following years to a few more including the McLeods, Friscos, Walshs, Lights & Joneses. Sadly, we missed it this year with our transition to North Florida, but looking forward to many more years of future fun.

From the tent, we moved into a pop-up trailer (thanks Dave & Bev Brittain, it was the best!) From the pop-up, into a travel trailer, which enabled us to venture for longer trips…and now into a fifth wheel. So, to answer some of you, NO we won’t be popping a tent each evening. You probably think we are far less adventurous now, but hey, it’s still considered camping, right?! I’ll remind myself of that when I’m enjoying it’s spacious & comfortable living area. :):)

Here’s the pop-up…so compact that my car could pull it, yet it had 2 king beds, kitchen sink & stove tops both inside & out, a dining table, a couch & even a toilet & shower stall!!

The travel trailer had 2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, plus a common room with sleeper couch, kitchen & large dinette. It was so cozy!!

Even if it rained, movie days were just as exciting!!

We even rented a motorhome in San Francisco & traveled down the PCH to San Diego…an amazing experience!! It was our first attempt at homeschooling on the road…can you guess that we loved it??!!

Skating in San Diego right at our campsite…doesn’t get much better than that for Ken!

And now, the Cyclone Fifth Wheel. Pulling up to Myrtle Beach this evening, we had a beautiful rainbow to greet us! Pics of our living quarters to follow…
